Incredibly lucky we are!! Today is a special chance to see how Shirakawago looks like when lit up in winter!! And you have one more chance to see it on November 14 this year! Everyone loves Shirakawago lit up at night in snowy landscape however through the rest of the year it isn’t lit up! And actually it gets quite dark after sunset!!
So this MINKAEN MUSEUM has lit it up now to give us a feel of how it is in winter!
About this outdoor museum: in 1968, the residents of the Kazura district were looking to sell and relocate some gassho style houses outside of their village. The opportunity to acquire unwanted gassho style houses led to their being relocated and reconstructed here, where they now serve as an openair museum. The oldfashioned lifestyle led in this type of housing is reproduced for visitors.
Description
The openair museum preserves and exhibits a total of 26 buildings including 9 listed buildings that are designated as important cultural assets of Gifu Prefecture. Structures including a watermill, a shrine, and a temple’s main hall are preserved in their original state. You can relive the culture of ancient Japan, nestled in the surrounding nature.
To allow guests to enjoy a relaxing visit while learning about the history and culture of Shirakawa Village, the museum grounds also contain facilities such as a handmade soba restaurant, a shop, and rest areas (operating periods vary between facilities).

SHIRAKAWA-GO LIGHT UP EVENT
Shirakawago is an ancient village in Japan that has gained its popularity over the past few years. Now it attracts thousands of tourists from all over the world each year especially during the winter time. The Light Up Event is held annually sometime in February. Due to its increasing demand, visit to Shirakawago during this time is limited, so you need to book your entire trip to Shirakawago well in advanced. Only those with tickets (priority given to guests staying overnight) that can go to the observation area during the light up event.
